This Tokyo region merchant’s chest (Choba Dansu), circa 1890s, was originally used by Japanese shopkeepers to store ledgers, documents, and valuables. Crafted from traditional timbers with hand-forged iron hardware, it reflects the practicality and craftsmanship of the Meiji era. Today, these antique Japanese chests are prized for their history, character, and versatile storage.
