This Shonai Antique Clothing Chest/Tansu was crafted in Japan’s renowned Shonai region, this antique clothing chest dates to circa 1910 and is made entirely from Paulownia (Kiri) timber. Highly prized throughout Japan for its lightweight nature, stability, and resistance to moisture and insects, Paulownia was traditionally chosen for storing valuable textiles, clothing, and family heirlooms.
Furthermore, the Shonai region, located in Yamagata Prefecture, is celebrated for producing some of Japan’s finest Tansu. Over generations, a distinctive style was developed by Shonai craftsmen, emphasising elegant proportions, practical design, and exceptional timber selection. Rather than relying on excessive ornamentation, the natural beauty of the timber is showcased, allowing the quality of the craftsmanship to take centre stage.
Over more than a century, a rich patina has developed, adding depth and character to the chest’s appearance. In addition, the soft grain of the Paulownia timber has matured beautifully with age, enhancing its warm and inviting presence. Traditional joinery techniques were employed during its construction, and as a result, the chest remains sturdy, functional, and attractive today.
