A Japanese transom, called a ranma, is an architectural panel placed above sliding doors (fusuma or shōji) to allow light and air circulation while maintaining privacy.
Ranma became especially refined during the Edo period, when skilled woodcarvers created intricate openwork designs featuring pine, cranes, dragons, and seasonal landscapes. They were common in merchant homes, temples, and tea houses.
Carved from cedar, cypress, or paulownia, ranma combine ventilation with artistry and often reflect regional carving styles. Today, antique ranma are valued as decorative wall panels, appreciated for their craftsmanship and cultural symbolism.
