Japanese Bizen Pottery Vase.
Bizen is one of the seven Ancient kilns of Japan where this vase was made.
Bizen pottery is one of Japan’s oldest ceramic traditions, produced in Bizen (now part of Okayama Prefecture). It dates back to the Heian period and developed as a high-fired stoneware tradition.
Unlike glazed ceramics, Bizen relies on natural ash effects from long wood firings in anagama kilns. The clay’s iron content produces earthy reds and browns with organic surface markings.
During the Momoyama period, Bizen became highly prized for tea ceremony wares, valued for their rustic, wabi-sabi aesthetic. Today, it remains a respected and living ceramic tradition.
