Delicate Flowers Japanese Silk Vintage Haori Jacket.
The Haori is a traditional Japanese jacket worn over a Kimono, valued for both practicality and style. Its origins date to the Edo period (1603–1868), when it was worn primarily by samurai as an outer layer for warmth and protection. The garment allowed freedom of movement while maintaining the formal appearance expected in Japanese society.
Over time, the haori became more widely adopted beyond the warrior class. During the Meiji period (1868–1912), social changes and modernization encouraged broader use of traditional clothing among merchants and townspeople. At this stage, the haori began to develop more decorative qualities, particularly in women’s fashion.
Many haori were made from fine silk and decorated with seasonal or symbolic patterns. Motifs such as cranes, maple leaves, waves, and geometric forms reflected both nature and Japanese aesthetics. Skilled textile artists produced fabrics using dyeing and weaving techniques that had been refined for centuries. The garment is traditionally worn open and secured with a cord known as a Haori-himo, which connects the front panels lightly.
By the Taishō period (1912–1926) and early Shōwa period (1926–1989), the haori had become a common and elegant outer garment. Today, vintage haori are collected and worn worldwide, admired for their craftsmanship, silk textiles, and timeless design.
