Arita ware is Japanese porcelain first produced in the early 17th century in Arita, on the island of Kyushu. Porcelain production began after kaolin deposits were discovered, enabling Japan’s first true porcelain.

During the Edo period, Arita kilns flourished. Styles such as Imari and Kakiemon were exported extensively to Europe through the Dutch East India Company, influencing European ceramics.

In the Meiji period, Arita ware evolved with more elaborate decoration for international exhibitions. Today it remains one of Japan’s most celebrated porcelain traditions, known for refined forms, underglaze blue, and richly coloured enamel decoration.
