Antique Japanese Elm Merchant Chest. Made in the Gifu Region. Merchant Chest are known as Cho-Ba Dansu in Japanese. The asymetrical design is made up of multiple drawers, compartments and a secret drawer. Merchants used these chests in the shop front. The chests were in pride of place exhibiting the owner’s prosperity.The front and outside of this chest is all Keyaki Japanese Elm and the drawers are Kiri Paulownia. The hardware is hand beaten Iron metal work. It was used for the storage of ledgers, ink, paper, documents and writing paraphernalia. Edo Arts imports these chests directly from Japan.
