During the Meiji period (1868–1912), Japanese artisans crafted two-section clothing chests known as Isho Tansu. These chests were often made from paulownia wood (kiri), prized for its light weight and natural insect-repelling properties. The two-section design allowed for easier transport and versatility, with each section typically featuring multiple drawers for organized storage. Hand-forged iron hardware adorned these chests, showcasing intricate craftsmanship and providing durability. Today, antique Isho Tansu are valued for their functional design and historical significance, reflecting Japan’s transition during the Meiji era.
