Shimada Kenichi was born in Osaka in 1959, and graduated the Osaka University of Art Ceramic Department in 1981 where he had studied under the progressive Yamada Hikaru of Sodeisha fame and avant-garde pottery Yanagi Mutsuo. In 1982 he took up a residency under the colorful Seto Hiroshi. By the mid-eighties his work was being displayed at the National Ceramics and National Traditional Crafts Exhibitions. He has since lived and worked in Mashiko, the Mecca of modern Ceramics.
