A chōba dansu is a traditional Japanese merchant’s chest used for storing business records, money, and valuables. During the Meiji period (1868–1912), chōba dansu from the Osaka region were known for their refined craftsmanship, made from sturdy Cypress, paulownia or Cedar wood construction. These chests typically had a symmetrical design with multiple small drawers, sliding doors, and an iron lockplate for security. The metal fittings were often decorative yet functional, showcasing the merchant’s status. Osaka-style chōba dansu were distinct for their elegant proportions and a balance of practicality and aesthetic appeal.
