Japanese Elm Merchant Chest or Choba Dansu from the Tokyo Region Merchant’s Chest is made up of multiple drawers and compartments they were used by shop merchants. These chests were in pride of place exhibiting the owner’s prosperity.
It is made of Hinoki Japanese Cypress and Sugi Japanese Cedar with hand forged iron metal work. It was used for the storage of ledgers, ink, paper, documents and writing paraphernalia.
