Antique Japanese Merchant Chest. A stunning double Merchant’s Chest (Cho-Ba Dansu). It was made in the Osaka region. Merchant’s Chests are made up of multiple drawers, compartments and a secret drawer. Merchants used these chests in the shop front. The chests were in pride of place exhibiting the owner’s prosperity. So were made from beautiful woods such as Hinoki, Cryptomeria (Japanese Cedar). The hardware is hand beaten Iron metal work. It was used for the storage of ledgers, ink, paper, documents and writing paraphernalia. Edo Arts imports these chests directly from Japan.
