Antique Japanese Merchant’s Chest.
This Merchant’s Chest or Cho-Ba Dansu originated from the Gifu region.
Merchant’s Chests are made up of multiple drawers, compartments and a secret drawer to help organise the shop ledgers and documents.
These chests were in pride of place exhibiting the owner’s prosperity.
It is made of Hinoki, Cryptomeria, Sugi Japanese Cedar and Paulownia.
Hardware is hand beaten metal work.
It was used for the storage of ledgers, ink, paper, documents and writing paraphernalia.
