Japanese Elm Merchant Chest or Choba Dansu. Elm fronted Tokyo Region Merchant’s Chest is made up of multiple drawers, compartments and a secret drawer and were used by shop merchants. These chests were in pride of place exhibiting the owner’s prosperity.
It is made of Keiyaki Japanese Elm and Sugi Japanese Cedar with hand forged iron metal work. It was used for the storage of ledgers, ink, paper, documents and writing paraphernalia.
