Mashiko Pottery Bowl

Bold splashes of black are liberally ladled onto this prominent Mashiko Bowl by Yoshikawa Mizuki enclosed in the original signed wooden box.
Yoshikawa Mizuki (Suijo) was born in Tokyo in 1941, and raised in the mountainous region of Odawara in Kanagwa, the border between the Kanto Plain and Western Japan. He entered Tokyo University of Art in 1961, studying under Fujimoto Yoshimichi and Tamura Koichi, both future Living National Treasures. He graduated with a Masters before entering the Ibaragi Prefectural Ceramics Research Facility in 1966. That same year he was awarded at the Ninhon Dento Kogei Shinsaku Ten. He built his first kiln in Mashiko in 1969, and two years later was first accepted into the Nihon Dento Kogei Ten National Crafts Exhibition. In 1973 he was accepted into the Nihon Togeiten National Ceramics Exhibition, and his submission was selected fro a group of pieces to tour the Americas.
